Proportional Representation
On June 3, 2015, Cooper Institute took the initiative to form a coalition supporting proportional representation in PEI. The work began with three people which led the formation of small diverse group to act as an organizing committee (now 17 people) known as the Proportional Representation Reference Group. The Reference Group has held 28 organizational meetings to-date.
The first major step was the formation of the PEI Coalition for Proportional Representation on September 9, 2016. The Coalition consists of 13 community-based organizations and over 100 individuals.
Proportional Representation Reference Group organized five participatory workshops over the past year and participated in all the consultations/presentation of the Special Committee on Democratic Renewal and engaged in communications with Special Committee on particular issues. The Reference Group had excellent media coverage with approximately 16 different presentations, including one media conference. Social media was established. The Group published a brochure outlining the purpose and functioning of the PEI Coalition for Proportional Representation, put together a number of short videos on PR.
In April, 2016 the PEI Action Team organized, became a member of the Coalition, designed a campaign and initiated some community events.
